Texas A&M University students this week overwhelmingly approved a $60 fee increase for renovations at the Memorial Student Center.
MSC Director Luke Altendorf said 4,211 students -- 68 percent of voters -- signed off on the fee increase during the two-day referendum. Another 1,982 students voted against the measure.
The increase, which goes into effect in fall 2008, bumps the $40 per semester fee up to $100 per semester -- the state-mandated cap. The money will generate about two-thirds of the funding needed for the $122 million project, Altendorf said. The rest would come from donors.
The project includes a major expansion and remodel of the beloved campus landmark, as well as bringing the building up to current codes.
Among the proposed changes: enclosing the open-air walkway between the MSC and Rudder Tower, moving the loading dock below ground, enlarging the ballroom, replacing corroded pipes, adding fire sprinklers and ensuring rest rooms comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
